Familiar Protrusions presents a series of sculptural works that investigate the tangibility of memory through the intervention of photographic sculpture onto the surfaces of nostalgic objects: the table, the television, and the playground. Through experimental use of 3D printing, CNC routing, laser etching, and cast glass Chris has created a suite of objects imbibed with the essence of his childhood photo archive. The result is a series of investigations that make visual the semantics and artifacts of the physical-digital divide. Through the use of sculptural photographic relief, the works aim to make apparent the ways in which our experience of memory emerges from and resides in the objects of our lives. The resulting imagery speaks to the abstract experience of memory, and the processes of translation distort it further in the attempt to communicate it with others.
