Imogen Steel is an emerging visual artist working primarily in cardboard installation. She uses the juxtaposition of fantastical imagery and the immediacy of everyday materials to reinterpret the mundane. Steel prioritises immersion, where recognisably artificial forms transport viewers into a state that invites the imagination to complete suggested scenes. In this state, everyday materials such as cardboard and fabric cease to feel ordinary, taking on a sense of life and meaning. Steel’s installation exaggerates natural forms - twisting roots and draped moss - to evoke wonder and curiosity. The work invites viewers to move through the installation rather than observe from a distance, turning the act of looking into exploration and ordinary materials into portals between real and imagined worlds.
