Lucien Peate

Bachelor of Visual Arts

Lucien Peate is a multidisciplinary artist based on unceded Ngunnawal and Ngambri lands. He is interested in interrogating and challenging gendered portrayals of bodies in his work, focussing on themes of parenthood, queer reproduction, disability and religious imagery. He combines photo montage, scannography, video and traditional drawing practices to create works that contribute to contemporary discussions around representation, body politics, feminism and transgender rights. His works have been described as haunting, beautiful and at times humorous. His project “Who Gets To Be Pregnant?” explores interoceptive experiences of the pregnant body and queers depictions of the domestic sphere. Lucien’s works interrogate and reflect on the objectification, medicalisation, invasion and voyeurism involved when interfacing with the fertility industrial complex as a transgender couple seeking to conceive children.
