My work, Lost Threads, explores the story behind Australia’s accelerating biodiversity losses.
Using plant data from the Threatened Species Index, the weaving is broken in 21 sections representing the populations of threatened Australian plants across the years 2000 to 2020. In only two decades, these populations have declined by more than 70%, reflected in the thinning density of the weave.
I chose the handwoven blanket form to reflect a personal expression of grief, comforting from loss while also ironically losing its ability to do so as threads are lost. Through this work I hope to offer a new tactile way to experience data, and explore weaving as a representation of the interconnectivity in real ecosystems.
