Ceramic tableware contributes to waste on a global scale. We continue to mass produce it in vast quantities, only to readily discard it.

To address this concern, I facilitated a series of workshops to reconnect people with their old tableware. Participants personalised their items with handmade decals; this involved photography, drawing, tracing and cutting. New layers took shape, building each object’s narrative.

This installation evokes the workshop process and shares the stories of those objects.

As a socially engaged practice, Mendware repairs our relationships with our domestic objects – and with each other. In a collective process of remaking, human connections are formed and embedded in each piece. The designs were then permanently adhered in an electric kiln, making each piece useable again. Only one low-temperature firing is needed, taking less energy than required to make new tableware.

Each item will be soon returned to its owner/ maker, to be valued anew.
