And Outcasts Always Mourn captures the experience of being haunted by figures from trans history, and the compelling influence they still have on our lives. Working with the spirit of gay and trans activist, author, and AIDs victim Lou Sullivan (1951-1991), the artist combines monologues reflecting contemporary trans life with performances of Sullivan’s diaries. The use of projection serves to create ghostly images of both the artist and Sullivan’s image haunting paper physically installed on the wall, and the process of the artist drawing conjures his spirit into the room like a magician casting a spell. Reflecting the gradual and repetitive nature of the process of transition, this work considers the ways in which history repeats itself.
