Based in Ngunnawal and Ngambri Country, Canberra, Josh Hughes (born 2002) is an emerging interdisciplinary artist currently exploring how bodies, environments and subcultures interact within the context of dance.
Working across the moving image, mark-making, painting, and projections, he explores the power and aesthetics of bodies in motion, specifically dance, which he envisions as a tool for defiance, freedom, and celebration.
Hughes is particularly drawn to the way dance traverses individual and community scales, acting simultaneously as a deeply personal expression of freedom and as a catalyst for community connection and sociocultural change. His capstone project, ‘Generation’, is a Three-channel immersive video installation that uses archival film footage as well as his own to express the generational impact dance has on individuals and communities.
