sui jackson's Hopes and Dreams comprises six salvaged glass rockets poised for launch. Balanced on glass fins atop steel launch pads, they contain vertical cavities with botanical life at different stages, alongside hand-soldered circuit sculptures.
These retro-futurist forms reference mid-century space-age optimism while exploring interdependence between living organisms and responsive machines. The circuits communicate via infrared signals, their LED matrices twinkling in patterns of connection and discussion. However, these systems never engage, the rockets held in anticipatory stasis. The glass hums with risk, fragility made tangible. A single tremor could explode the structure into glittering fragments, death to all life within. The danger is real. The danger is attractive. Viewers are drawn closer, compelled by the quiet tension interrupting the machine conversations. They respond with kinetic loneliness, reflectors rotating, and searching, until connection resumes...
